Living a healthier life takes time. People often put off lifestyle changes because they don’t have the emotional or physical resources to devote to them. But there are small steps you can take every day to live healthier.
-
Combine your workday & your workout
Sitting five or more hours per day can increase your risk of heart failure. A simple solution: stand. Use a pile of books to prop up your computer or purchase a standing desk. If you’re not comfortable standing, swap your chair for an exercise ball. It improves balance and strengthens your abs. - Skip the sour cream
Did you know sour cream has three times the calories and 20 times the fat of Greek yogurt? Get the same creamy effect by adding a dollop of plain Greek yogurt to your taco or baked potato. You can even mix yogurt with fresh herbs like dill and use it as a substitute for mayonnaise. You also get five times the protein with yogurt than with similar condiments.
- Sleep smarter
If you have trouble winding down at the end of the day, try a few of these tips: a) Keep the bedroom between 65-72 degrees. A cool, comfortable environment fosters better sleep. b) Turn the alarm clock to face the wall. It removes the temptation to watch the clock, and gets rid of artificial light that can make your body think it’s time to get up. c) Lavender has been used to ease insomnia, so use a lavender-scented candle or room spray.
- Make a list
Everyone has things they need to do around the house. Make a list and do one small thing every day or every other day. Clean out the fridge. Gather clothes you don’t wear to donate. Wash the windows. Picking one thing at a time strengthens your attention span and gives you a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.
- Say thanks
Studies show that grateful people have a reduced risk of heart disease, lower stress levels and even sleep better at night. Thank one person every day — text your Mom, post on a friend’s Facebook page or simply offer a heartfelt “thank you” to a coworker. You’ll be surprised how it will improve your mood and your health.
